By combining Moodle...a free course management system with
Audacity...a free open source software for recording and editing sounds;
Public school teachers have found a valuable resource for assessing conversation
in their advanced foriegn language classes.
Gone are the cumbersome tape recorders. Students now can respond to verbal prompts from a CD on any computer, save their conversation as an MP3 file, and upload to Moodle for grading.
Advantages include the ability for students to work from home, a friendly interface, and conversational format. Not to mention the fact that the software is FREE.
