Imagine touring students through a virtual world. Your cartoon-like avatars(3D representation of the self) are magically transported to a reconstruction of the Sistine Chapel or the Globe Theater.
The students' avatars can talk to one another using text or microphone enabled chat. The instructor can monitor and record conversation to encourage appropriate participation. This is a small slice of the educational world emerging in online virtual environments.
But it's only the tip of the iceberg...
Alan Hook and Pete Wardle have developed a conduit between the virtual and real world.
“Connecting Point” is a first life/second life live camera feed system that links a first life physical space to a second life location through two screens, one in second life and one in first life. The live camera feeds are set up to link the participants to complete goals and play games in and across the two areas.
